Since her first presentation at De Rijksakademie Open Studios in 2015 we are following the work of Margaret Haines. Her work at the Rijks was as intriguing as the studio visit that followed. When you speak to Margaret you notice that her flow of thoughts is a complex one. She conducts extensive research, she has many references behind each idea and she manages to link very different topics, thoughts and associations in a way that is out of the ordinary and far from deducible.

The first video work that we ever saw of her and that made such an impression on us was ‘The Stars Down To Earth’. In this work, the divine and the mundane seem to meet in a strange suburb of L.A., where the main actors could be either Greek mythology characters or freaks. This feeling of almost hypnotical disorientation is a remaining element throughout the whole film where the astrology lessons, political prophecies, elements of tragedy and queer figures make you wonder if you find yourself in a surreal fiction or inside a rough realistic portrait.

Such experience of (pleasant) perplexity comes back in all the works of Margaret we have seen, where characters embody at once the misfit, the ugly, the awkward, the hipster, while the narrative navigates fluidly in and out of complex constellation of issues as politics, sexuality, psychology, history, mythology.

Margaret Haines (b. 1984, Montreal, Canada) studied at École des Beaux Arts, Paris, FR and Concordia University, Montreal, CAN and received her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA.
In 2015-2016 she has been a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited at Galerie Lily Robert, Paris, FR, ltd los angeles, Los Angeles, CA, Carroll Fletcher Gallery, London, UK, ICA, London, UK, Western Front Exhibitions, Vancouver, CA and Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin, DE amongst others.
