Budapest Gallery Residency

At the moment, the Open Call for the Budapest Gallery Residency is closed. Thanks to all artists who send in their proposal. Keep an eye on our website when the Open Call will open again in 2027.

1646’s residency programme aims to support innovative practices and engage the local art community in The Hague, while at the same time developing global networks. That is why we are pairing up with Budapest Galéria’s Artist Exchange Programme, to support an artist from The Hague to spend a month in Budapest and to host a Hungarian artist in The Hague.

In Budapest, you get the chance to explore and discover the city’s contemporary art scene with the support of the Exchange Programme coordinator and the entire staff of Budapest Galéria. They will provide network opportunities for the selected participant as well as the opportunity to present a small solo exhibition in the show space of Massolit Books & Café. The selected artist is provided with a fully equipped 60 m2 studio apartment in the centre of Budapest, a fee and stipend to cover the costs of materials and travel expenses.

Please note: this residency opportunity is open for professional active artists living and working in The Hague only.

The residency period takes place in September 2026.

Specification of the budget provided:
€1000 Artist fee
€750 Production budget
€300 Travelling expense

Please prepare your application with the following documents:

    1. A project proposal: describing your project and its goals (max. 1 A4 or 500 words, text only);
    2. Portfolio (max. 30 pages);
    3. CV/resume.

Your application should be uploaded as one single PDF file (max. 50MB).

For large files (like videos), please insert a link to the source where the file can be viewed and if necessary, include the passwords.

Keep the following documentation tips in mind:

    1. Place your work on horizontal pages (unless the original work is vertical) as most of the applications are initially viewed on a horizontal screen (laptop);
    2. Make sure you put only one or two works per page (combining too many works makes the page illegible);
    3. Insert title, material, size, and year of the work next to or under the image on the same page. In addition, you may include a short description of the work.
    4. Double-check your links in the final PDF before submitting it. If the links do not work, Budapest Galéria can’t review your application correctly and properly. The links should be active for at least up to two months after the deadline has passed.

For more information about the application procedure, please contact air@1646.nl
