Internship – Communication

Closing date: November 23, 2025

1646 is an art space for contemporary art in the centre of The Hague with a strong international and experimental program.

As an 30 year old art space, 1646 has supported the production of new work by emerging and established artists. The core of our activities is to offer a broader insight into artistic practice. This results in a consistent programming of solo exhibitions and a series of peripheral activities that give the public a deeper insight into the creative process and the influences behind the work, including lectures, residencies, performances, and international collaborations.

Applications are now open for the internship period January 12, 2026 – April 12, 2026.

Communication Internship at 1646
As a Communication Intern, you will support the PR, Marketing and Communication department in their daily activities. You will help with maintaining and developing 1646’s online and offline presence, contributing to how the public experiences and connects with our program.

Your tasks include:
– Assisting with the creation and scheduling of social media content (Instagram, Facebook, newsletter, etc.)
– Supporting the documentation of exhibitions and events (photo, video, archive)
– Assisting with in-house graphic design work, such as visuals for online use, during events and other promotional materials
– Helping to write and edit texts for different audiences, such as website updates, press releases, and newsletters
– Supporting the visibility and communication strategy of 1646’s public program

Who are we looking for?
Your profile fits this position if you are an enthusiastic and flexible team player, who can also work independently. You are proactive, curious, and have a strong eye for detail. You take responsibility and enjoy thinking along with us about how to best communicate 1646’s program and values.
Affinity with or strong interest in international contemporary art is important. Experience or interest in social media, content creation, or graphic design (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite or Canva) is an advantage. Because of the international profile of our organisation and team, being able to speak and write well in both English and Dutch is also an asset.

What we offer
1646 is committed to making your internship an enjoyable and valuable learning experience that contributes to your personal development. You’ll gain hands-on experience in communicating an international contemporary art program and work closely with a small, dedicated team.
The internship period is 3 months, starting on January 12, 2026, for 3 days per week. The monthly internship compensation €300 for 3 days a week (including commuting expenses).
