Artist and filmmaker Su Hui-Yu talks about experimental film, the history of Taiwan, and revisiting the past to bring it back to the present.

Su Hui-Yu presents new work in The Cinema of Séance, his first solo-exhibition in The Netherlands. The work of Su walks a line between history and memory, on a collective, universal level and on a personal, individual level — how does a national past relate to the collective memories of the people in it? Recalling a cult-genre of 1980s Taiwanese cinema, the works place the socio-political strife of that era in Taiwan squarely in the present, addressing not only memory, but also a re-imagination of taboos and cultural values from the past and the present.

Over Su Hui-Yu: Su Hui-Yu is geboren in Taipei in 1976. Hij behaalde zijn MFA aan Taipei International University of the Arts in 2003 en is sindsdien actief als kunstenaar. Su maakte deel uit van gerenommeerde internationale film festivals, tentoonstellingen en kunstinstellingen, waaronder het IFFR (Rotterdam), OzAsia festival (Adelaide, AUS), de Videonale (Bonn, DE), PERFORMA (New York, VS), Wuzhen Contemporary Art Exhibition (CHN), MOCA Taipei (TW), Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (TW), San Jose Museum of Art (USA), Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University (USA), Casino Luxemburg – Forum d’art contemporain (LU), Bangkok Arts and Culture Center (TH) en Power Station of Art (Shanghai, CHN). In 2017 presenteerde IFFR Rotterdam een retrospectief van Su’s videowerk, en zijn video Super Taboo ging in première tijdens de Tiger Awards Competition for Short Films. Su deed ook mee aan de Tiger Short Competition in 2019 met The Glamorous Boys of Tang. Meer informatie op www.suhuiyu.com
