Pilgrims in an unholy land.

“Now, he who finds the Grail must face three challenges. First, is the path of God: Only the penitent man shall pass. Second, is the word of God: Only in the footsteps of God, shall he proceed. Last is the breath of God: Only in a leap from the lion’s head shall he prove his worth. But choose wisely, for while the true Grail will bring you life, the false Grail will take it from you.”

1646 invited Jeroen van Hulst to compile an evening responding to the current exhibition by Lindsay Lawson, which was on show at 1646.

This evening took an art historical approach to the incongruity of form and essence attributed to objects, allowing them to be venerated. The objects in the Indiana Jones series function as perfect motivation for an arbitrary sense of good and evil to establish itself. All the viewer has to do is believe the item is worth the onscreen action.

Over Lindsay Lawson: Lawson (1982, USA) received her BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University, her MFA in New Genres from UCLA, and attended the St≈†delschule in Frankfurt am Main. She has exhibited internationally at venues such as Gillmeier Rech, Berlin; Herald St., London; Frutta Gallery, Rome; LAXART, Los Angeles; Yossi Milo Gallery, New York; Carroll/Fletcher, London; Galerie Jeanroch Dard, Brussels; Galerie Tobias Naehring, Leipzig.

Over Jeroen van der Hulst is a writer, self-proclaimed art historian and allround bon vivant working at Stroom Den Haag and involved in projects such as The Naked and Pamphlet Magazine.
