For the Background Evening of Sol Calero’s solo exhibition at 1646, artist initiative Nice Flaps is hosting a life drawing session located within Sol’s ambiguous spatial storytelling.

Getting encouraged to consider perception, using the medium of drawing to question how things change depending on the perspective which is being looked from. Nice Flaps invited us to retell a story that has already been re-told, to reinterpret a space that is already a translation of a ‘somewhere else’. For the life drawing session, two models guided us through some of the dualities present in the work and thought processes of Sol Calero; past-future, reality-fiction, interior-exterior, memory-imagination.

About

Sol Calero: Calero (b. 1982, Caracas, Venezuela) lives and works in Berlin. Her work revolves around the notions of ancestry, culture, and the transformation of meaning that visual symbols can undergo in society. Calero intends to engage the viewer through her artworks which themselves proliferate meaning, imitating the cultural signs which she aims to explore. Sol Calero and her partner Christopher Kline run the Berlin-based project space Kinderhook & Caracas. Calero was shortlisted for the Preis der Nationalgalerie and nominated for the Future Generation Art Prize in 2017. Her works were exhibited in venues such as Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Düsseldorf Kunstverein; La Casa Encendida, Madrid; Copenhagen Contemporary; Villa Arson, Nice; Brücke Museum, Berlin; Nikolaikirche, Stadtmuseum Berlin; Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon; SALTS, Basel; Studio Voltaire, London; Hamburger Kunsthalle; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin; ACCA Melbourne, Melbourne; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris; Dortmunder Kunstverein, Dortmund; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria; Folkestone Triennial; MO.CO. Hôtel des collections, Montpellier; amongst others.

About Nice Flaps: Nice Flaps is an artist initiative formed with the unanimous aim to gather and observe together; to provide time and space to concentrate, to look, to be; without an outcome in mind other than contemplation itself. The initiative offers two hour, non-taught, experimental drawing sessions hosted in different locations in and around The Hague. Nice Flaps works with models, artists, and their artworks, facilitating an alternative means of audience interaction through life drawing. It is run by artists Annemarie Wadlow (b. 1993, UK) and Alejandra López Martínez (b. 1992, ES).
