1646 is excited to announce that Ariane Toussaint has been selected as the artist for our residency exchange programme in collaboration with Budapest Galéria. Ariane will be in Budapest from September to October.

In her work, Ariane is exploring personal and social histories of domesticity, womanhood and craft. Her research focuses on spaces of intimacy and care, with great attention to tactility. During the residency in Hungary, Ariane will be connecting with the local environment by visiting museums, finding textiles at local markets, and reaching out to artist-run initiatives. With all the collected materials and connections, Ariane will develop an installation that is rooted in specific Hungarian crafts and combines patchwork and screen printing techniques.

The fully funded residency is generously supported by the Dutch Embassy in Hungary and Stroom The Hague.

Info

About Ariane Toussaint (b. 1996 France) is an artist living and working in The Hague. Her works range from installation and textiles to books to explore personal and social histories of domesticity, womanhood and craft. Her research focuses on spaces of intimacy and care, with great attention to tactility. She creates site-specific textile installations that explore shifts in light and color, using patchwork techniques as a metaphor for mending and building narratives. Inspired by the textile traditions of the contexts in which she works, her projects often incorporate writing, craft-based learning and interactive elements. She received her degree in BA Photography at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in 2020, and has a background in Textile Design from the Central Saint Martins in London. Her work has been shown in various spaces in The Netherlands and abroad, such as Centre National Edition Art Image in Paris, Art Au Centre in Liège and CAV Gallery in Bucharest. She has received support from the Mondriaan Fonds and participated in Bucharest AiR. She also co-initiates the annual open studios program Bermuda Open in The Hague and is an assistant curator at the artist initiative The Balcony.
