The last two years, 1646 has collaborated with the international Artist in Residency program Orbital to promote cultural exchange of The Netherlands with Spain. In 2017 1646 invited Bernice Nauta to go to the residency Orbital in 2017 and in 2018 Bonno van Doorn visited the residency in Santander.
During this time 1646 has received guests as well: first – Raúl Hevia, and afterwards 1646 were happy to receive the artist Javier Arce.
The work of Javier Arce (Santander, 1973) is characterised by his special attention for drawing, especially in the extension of this discipline to new territories and also the search and investigation of its specificity in the general field of contemporary artistic creation. But his work also addresses the field of video in cases where the project needs a broader and more explicit narrative, as well as installation, a field in which he has been insisting in recent years. Recently, the artist locates geographically and thematically his work in a shepherd’s cabin in the mountains of Cantabria, where he presents a lucid relationship between the local and the global, the personal and the political, between the natural landscape and contemporary conflicts and, in short, between the individual desire and the collective impulse.
Javier Arce has a degree in Engraving from the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas in Oviedo and his Honors Degree in Fine Art at the Basque Country University. He received his Masters in Sculpture from the Wimbledon School of Fine Art. He was granted with The International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York in 2008. He received in 2007 the Mención de Honor Generación 2007 in Madrid. He was also awarded By Fundación de Arte y Derecho the same year and by Marcelino Botín Foundation the year before. His latest individual exhibitions include The First Loan Exhibition. The bastard museum, CAB, Burgos, Spain; This could be a show of historical importance, Museum of contemporary art in Zagreb; as well as his interventions in Espai 13 at Miró Foundation in Barcelona, and Espai Quatre, Casal Solleric, Majorca. His works have been part of exhibitions such as Reproducción, repetición, reivindicación, at The 4th Biennial of Experimental Etching, National Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu, Romania; The 29th Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia; or The Sovereign European Art Prize at The Barbican Art Center, London, United Kingdom. He has also exhibited in the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatia; MUSAC in Leon; CA2M in Móstoles, Madrid; ARTIUM in Vitoria, etc.His work is included in numerous collections such as Caja Madrid; Marcelino Botín Foundation; ARTIUM Museum, Vitoria; the Coca-Cola Foundation; Santander Museum of Fine Arts; CAB, Burgos; MUSAC, León; Fundación El Monte, Seville; La Caixa Foundation Contemporary Art Collection; IVAM Museum or DKV Collection, Valencia, etc.
Orbital Residency is a non-profit artist-in-residence programme for young and mid-career artists with the goal to promote their work while creating a network of artists, curators, institutions and other cultural agents from different places. It is focused on the exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas within the framework of international contemporary art departing from a specific context. The programme ensures the development and presentation of the artists’ work, enriching both their proposals and their possibilities of projection and visibility. This programme also intends to create a space for collaboration and education that would help the cultural and artistic scene of the region.
