On the 9th of September, Inas Halabi will start her two-month residency at 1646 with her research project The Right of Return as the selected artist-researcher of the residency collaboration between ReCNTR and 1646.
In this project, Halabi (PS/NL) will critically examine afforestation projects initiated by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) in Palestine, such as the establishment of Israeli national parks and reserves on top of demolished Palestinian villages, as a means of erasing their remains and permanently confiscating the land. It reflects on how afforestation strategies, including the planting of pine and eucalyptus trees, were used to conceal violence and displacement. These “foreign species”, through their rapid growth and acidity, rendered the soil unusable and hampered the local economy, which was dependent on agriculture. Through this lens, the project brings invisible forms of violence to our attention.
On the 12th of December, Halabi will be presenting elements from her current film project and recent research, including sound recordings from the locations of demolished Palestinian villages that have now been turned into Israeli national parks or nature reserves. Come over and join in informal conversation(s) with the artist and other visitors.
