1646 will host the premiere of Isadora Neves Marques’ video YWY, Visions (2023). In addition to this exciting debut, you will also have the opportunity to see the screening of the film Exterminator Seed (2017). YWY, Visions 2023 (13 minutes) is the last project in the series of works and texts that began in 2017, including films, installations, and a book published by Sternberg Press in 2022.
In previous films, Neves Marques introduced the character YWY, portrayed by indigenous actress and performer Zahy Tentehar Guajajara and long-time collaborator
of Neves Marques. YWY became a way to complicate expected roles and imaginaries about indigeneity, gender, technology, environmentalism and science fiction.
After wrapping up the first two movies, Neves Marques asked herself: Who actually is this woman? Where does she come from? How does she speak both to a Western imaginary of robots and the localized livelihood of native people?
The second movie shown is Exterminator Seed, 2017 (28 minutes). In the work, the viewer is shown how oil spill contaminated the Brazilian coast.
Capivara, an oil rig worker, is evacuated back to Rio de Janeiro, where the locals remain ignorant of the incoming disaster. Despite the danger, Capivara wishes only to return to the offshore oil rigs. In the city he is aided by YWY, a woman who convinces him to travel to her homeland in Mato Grosso do Sul in search of work in the soya and corn monocultural plantations. There, YWY tells him about the infertility of such transgenic plants and of an android like her. But Capivara, a human, is incapable of understanding her.
The premiere is scheduled for Thursday, November 23. The doors open at 19:00 and the screening starts at 19:30.The new video YWY, Visions will continue to be shown for two more extra weeks in the backspace at Boekhorststraat 127 until the 3rd of December.
The screening on 23/11 costs €3 and it includes a drink.
You can buy the tickets at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/screening-isadora-neves-marques-tickets.
The premiere of the last video work of the series YWY, Visions is connected to Neves Marques’ exhibition that was shown in 1646 at the end of 2020, which was co-curated by Rosa Lleó and was a collaboration with CA2M in Madrid.
The new work, YWY, Visions 2023, was supported by: Gemeente Den Haag, 1646 and produced within the programme of ”la Caixa” Foundation, Support for Creation’18 Production.
