1646 came across the works of Paris and Prague-based artist Julie Béna during a scouting trip to Prague last year. While researching for our future program, we contacted the director of FUTURA, the strongest and most forward thinking contemporary art platform in Prague. Novotný provided us with a long list of surely 150 artist… Out of that impressive list Julie Béna’s work was clearly something that 1646 needed to present in The Netherlands.
Béna’s practice is not limited to one medium or topic as she works on environments that draw inspiration from the world of literature, film, theatre and popular culture. Her work whirls in a phantasmagorical state, and winds through the imagination with a gestern sensibility. Béna constructs her “own subject” through personas in videos, performances, sculptures and sing-song poetry.
Even though she did study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, this will be the first time her work will be shown in The Netherlands.
